It comprises three large caves and is home to the world’s tallest Lord Murugan Statue, standing at 42.7 meters (130 feet) high. This site draws large crowds during Thaipusam, an annual festival where Hindus honor Lord Murugan, celebrated in January or February each year. This natural wonder is the most visited tourist attraction.
- Istana Negara - Known as the National Palace or King’s Palace, this is the official residence of the Malaysian King. A photo stop is included here. This palace is relatively new.
- National Monument - The National Monument is a sculpture honoring fallen soldiers in Malaysia’s struggle for freedom, particularly against the Japanese occupation during World War II and the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960. It is the world’s tallest bronze freestanding monument. Annually, on 31 July, Warriors’ Day, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Prime Minister, and the heads of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysia Police pay tribute to the fallen heroes by laying garlands at the monument.
- National Mosque (Masjid Negara) - The National Mosque, locally known as Masjid Negara, is a national symbol of Islam. It features a main prayer hall with 48 smaller domes and is located northwest of the old railway station, a few hundred meters from the end of Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin. Spanning 13 acres, the mosque can accommodate up to 15,000 people and resembles the Grand Mosque in Mecca, with abstract shapes and geometric lattice in its roofing and ironworks. The Grand Hall is the most intricate part of the mosque, adorned with verses from the Koran.
- Merdeka Square - Known locally as Dataran Merdeka, Independence Square is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Formerly the Selangor Club Padang or simply the “Padang” (meaning “field” in Malay), it was the cricket green of the Selangor Club (now the Royal Selangor Club). It was here that the Union Flag was lowered, and the Malaysian flag was raised for the first time at midnight on 31 August 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the traditional venue for the annual Merdeka Parade (National Day Parade).
- Petronas Twin Towers - Once the tallest towers in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers are now the tallest twin buildings globally. The 88-story towers were designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates and are connected by a 58-meter-long, double-decker Sky Bridge on the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level). Standing 451 meters tall, the Petronas Twin Towers held the world-title claim until 2004 when Taipei 101, measuring 508 meters, was built. Today, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (opened in 2010) is the world’s tallest building. Located in the KL city center, the Petronas Twin Towers’ architecture is inspired by Islamic design and primarily houses the corporate headquarters of the Petronas Company and other offices.
This is only a photo stop. Not going up the Tower.
