- Batu Caves - Located in Malaysia, the Batu Caves are among the most significant Hindu religious sites outside India and are a must-visit after exploring Kuala Lumpur’s shopping and attractions.
Situated just eight miles north of the city, the Batu Caves are one of the many fascinating activities to enjoy around Kuala Lumpur. The site draws approximately 5,000 visitors daily, who come to ascend the challenging 272 steps leading to the caverns.
The Batu Caves serve as a central point for Hindu Malaysians, especially during Thaipusam. They feature a 113-year-old temple, along with a captivating collection of Hindu art and shrines.
Annually, during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, the Batu Caves attract over a million devotees and onlookers. The eight-hour procession of music and ceremony involves offerings placed before a massive statue of Lord Murugan, the Hindu God of War.
What to Expect at the Batu Caves
Upon approaching the caves, the first sight is a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan. Erected in 2006, this statue is the world’s largest dedicated to the deity and stands guard over the 272 steps leading to the cave entrances.
As visitors ascend the steps, they are likely to be entertained by a group of monkeys that thrive on the constant flow of tourists. While taking photos is encouraged, it’s important to keep an eye on personal belongings!
Resting points along the stairs offer pleasant views of Kuala Lumpur’s suburbs.
Some Things to Know Before Visiting the Batu Caves
Entry to the Batu Caves is free.
The caves are open year-round from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
The area is not very accessible for those with disabilities, so senior travelers may find it challenging to climb the stairs to the entrances.
The wild caves are quite muddy; it’s advisable to bring a change of clothes if planning to join any spelunking tours.
There are stalls and restaurants offering Indian cuisine outside the entrance of the Batu Caves.

Bukit Melawati - At Melawati Hill (Monkey Hill), visitors can enjoy the beautiful view of Kuala Selangor and explore Fort Altingsburg, the Royal Mausoleum, and the legendary 100 steps leading to the famed execution block. Visitors can also encounter silver-leaf monkeys at this location. The silvery lutung is a medium-sized monkey with a long, non-prehensile tail. It has grey-tipped, dark brown or black fur, giving it a uniform silvery appearance. Unlike some related species, there are no lighter markings on the face or body, except for a patch of whitish hair on the groin of females. A crest of fur runs along the top of the head, and the hair on the cheeks is long, often covering the ears. The hands and feet are hairless, with dark-colored skin, and have opposable thumbs and toes. Females range from 46 to 51 centimeters (18 to 20 in) in head-body length, with an average weight of 5.7 kilograms (13 lb) and a tail length of 67 to 75 centimeters (26 to 30 in). Males are slightly larger, from 50 to 58 centimeters (20 to 23 in) in length, with an average weight of 6.6 kilograms (15 lb) and a tail length of 67 to 75 centimeters (26 to 30 in). Like other langurs, the silvery lutung has a large three-chambered stomach to digest the cellulose found in its herbivorous diet. This allows for fermentation of food and has some similarities with the stomach of ruminants. The intestine is unusually long, even compared to those of other langurs, and has several pouches along its length, which carry out further fermentation of plant matter. The teeth have grinding ridges and other modifications to allow the more efficient processing of tough leaves.

NYC Tour Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor - The tour will depart to Pasir Penambang, a fisherman village, where participants can enjoy a boat ride for a firefly tour and later dine at a seafood restaurant by the Kuala Selangor river. After dinner, the main attraction is a motorboat ride along the Kuala Selangor River to observe the fireflies in the mangrove area. Fireflies, locally known as ‘kelip kelip’, are perhaps Kuala Selangor’s biggest attraction. Emitting bright light from their abdomen, these insects prefer mangrove swamp areas. At night, they can be seen illuminating the mangrove trees lining the riverbanks while feeding on the leaves’ nectar.
