• Batu Caves - Batu Caves is a complex of limestone caves located in Peninsular Malaysia. These caves are among the country’s most popular tourist destinations and serve as a pilgrimage site for Tamil Hindus. Named after the nearby Sungai Batu (Batu River), they are situated 7 miles (13 km) north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital. The caves were largely unknown to anyone outside the local community until 1878, when American naturalist William Temple Hornaday brought them to international attention. In 1891, K. Thamboosamy Pillay, a prominent leader of the Tamil Hindu community in Malaya (as the area was then known), established a temple within the caves. It is believed that he was inspired by the resemblance of the cave entrance to the tip of the vel, or spear, traditionally associated with the deity Murugan. The Tamil Hindu festival Thaipusam, dedicated to Murugan, was first celebrated at this site in 1892 and now draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year.
