Hiking from Jiankou to Mutianyu Section

The journey starts at Xizhazi Village, situated 587m (1926ft) above sea level. Departing from the village, the hike involves a steady ascent to the ruined tower, Zhengbeilou, at 830m (2723ft) above sea level. Midway to Zhengbeikou, the guide will lead a brief nature walk to explore the “less Potala,” a broken tower offering stunning landscape views of Jiankou. Take your time to savor the scenery.

After a short rest, continue to Zhengbeikou. At the summit, the challenging part is over. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Jiankou and the natural beauty of the Jiankou basin. Then, proceed eastward to Mutianyu. The path includes a few vertical climbs and scrambles. Due to overgrown bushes, walking along the edge, high above the ground, is necessary.

Mutianyu Great Wall - The contrast between the restored and ruined sections is striking. Upon reaching tower 14 of Mutianyu, there are three options: (1) relax and take the cable car down to the exit from tower 14, which takes about 8 minutes; (2) walk down from tower 14 to 10, exit Mutianyu, and follow the hill trail to the exit, taking approximately 1.5 hours; (3) continue walking to tower 6 and descend via the toboggan/lift chair. The path is easy to follow, and if option 3 is chosen, the guide will meet you at the toboggan/lift chair exit, allowing you to enjoy the additional hike independently.
Enjoy a delicious lunch at Mutianyu before a 2-hour drive to Gubeikou, where a hot shower, comfortable beds, and a delightful dinner at a local farmer’s guesthouse await.

Hiking from Gubeikou to the Jinshanling Wall

The Great Wall of Gubeikou - Awaken to the peacefulness of Gubeikou, and after breakfast, the adventure begins gently at Gubeikou Village with a short climb to a broken tower. Walk eastward, taking plenty of photography stops before reaching General Tower. From there, capture the true essence of Gubeikou Mountain.

Jinshanling Great Wall - After 2-3 hours of hiking in the Gubeikou section, reach the western part of the Jinshanling Wall, where the towers are sturdily and beautifully constructed. Each tower has its unique features and appearance. Jinshanling Great Wall is less crowded, making it an excellent place to explore the Great Wall near Beijing.
