• Longqing Gorge - Known as the “north three gorge,” Longqing Gorge is a renowned water dam located in a suburban village of Beijing. Visiting the gorge is a favored weekend activity for Beijing locals.

Longqing Gorge is celebrated for its picturesque canyon scenery. The canyon was submerged by a reservoir following the construction of the nearby Longqing Dam. The mountain and river views are reminiscent of other iconic Chinese landscapes. It is often referred to as “Little Three Gorges” for its resemblance to a “microcosm of the Yangtze River’s legendary Three Gorges” or “mini Li River” due to its “narrow peaks and dramatic rock faces” similar to the Li River in Guilin.

The main attraction for tourists in the scenic area is a 15-minute open-top boat cruise along the base of Longqing Gorge. A cable car transports visitors to a mountain peak, and a 258-meter (846 ft) yellow dragon-shaped escalator takes visitors to the top of Longqing Dam.

• Guyaju Caves - The Guyaju Caves are the remnants of a cave complex that likely served as homes for a fortified community in a valley near Beijing. The origins of this community remain a mystery due to the uncertainty surrounding the founding people and their eventual disappearance.

The settlement might have been established by a tribe from the Liao Dynasty (950 AD). However, the history of the caves remains an “ongoing archaeological enigma,” as historical records do not provide clear answers. The dwellings and worship hall are carved from the cliff’s rock face. The cave rooms are closely packed, and in some areas, they are cut at different levels of the same cliff face, resembling a multistory building.

The complex contains 350 chambers within its 117 caves. A Chieftain’s Palace is situated at the base of one of the rock faces, featuring a more elaborate residence with 8 rooms supported by columns carved from the rock.
