Temple of Heaven - The tour begins with a hotel pickup and a 30-minute drive to the Temple of Heaven. This architectural and landscape masterpiece vividly represents a cosmogony crucial to the development of one of the world’s great civilizations. The Temple’s symbolic design significantly influenced Far Eastern architecture and planning for centuries. For over two millennia, China was governed by feudal dynasties, whose legitimacy is symbolized by the Temple’s design and layout. The Temple’s location, planning, and architecture, along with the sacrificial ceremonies and music, are rooted in ancient principles that connect numbers and spatial organization to beliefs about heaven and its earthly relationship, mediated by the emperor as the ‘Son of Heaven.’
-
Lama Temple (Yonghegong) - Originally the residence of a Qing Prince and the birthplace of Emperor Qianlong, Yonghe Palace was the “hidden residence” of both Prince Yong and Emperor Qianlong. In 1744, it was transformed into a lama temple, becoming the center for the Qing government’s management of Tibetan Buddhist affairs nationwide. It is now the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Xizang. Yonghe Palace features three unique wooden carvings, including a 26-meter tall sculpture recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest single wooden sculpture.
After lunch, a 40-minute drive leads to the Summer Palace.
- Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) - The Summer Palace is a stunning example of Chinese landscape garden design. It combines natural landscapes of hills and water with man-made structures like pavilions, halls, palaces, temples, and bridges, creating a harmonious ensemble of exceptional aesthetic value. The Summer Palace embodies the philosophy and practice of Chinese garden design, which has been pivotal in the evolution of this cultural form throughout the East.
The tour concludes with a return to the hotel.
