- Tyre Hippodrome - Situated on Lebanon’s southern coast, 83 km south of Beirut, the ancient town of Tyre was a prominent Phoenician city that dominated the seas and established thriving colonies like Cadiz and Carthage.
Tyre, an ancient Phoenician city, is now the fourth largest city in Lebanon, following Beirut, Tripoli, and Sidon. The city boasts several ancient sites, including its Roman Hippodrome, which was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list in 1979. According to Herodotus, Tyre was founded around 2750 BC and was initially constructed as a walled city on the mainland.
Tyre was renowned for producing a rare and highly valuable purple dye, known as Tyrian purple, derived from the murex shellfish. The city features the famous “Arch of Hadrian” and one of the region’s finest hippodromes, both built during the Roman Empire.
The historical city and Roman Hippodrome highlight the site’s poor management, with modern buildings and impoverished houses surrounding it. The entrance fee is $2.30 per person, and a quick tour of the site, including the Arch and Hippodrome, takes about 20 minutes.
Tyre is also a ‘must-see’ for its charming harbor, sandy beach, and the delightful old quarter of the city.
