- Falls Road - This is a remarkable chance to explore the heartland of the IRA, guided by former republican prisoners who will share the history and insights about the political murals adorning the walls. The Belfast Brigade of the Provisional IRA, the largest command area of the organization, was based in Belfast. Established in 1969 alongside the Provisional IRA, it was historically divided into three battalions: the First Battalion in the Andersonstown/Lenadoon/Twinbrook area of Southwest Belfast; the Second Battalion in the Falls Road/Clonard/Ballymurphy district of West Belfast; and the Third Battalion in nationalist enclaves in the north (Ardoyne, New Lodge, Ligoniel), south (the Markets, Lower Ormeau), and east (Short Strand) of the city. Experience a journey through the IRA’s heartland with guidance from ex-republican prisoners.
- Shankill Road - This tour is led by loyalist ex-prisoners who will provide insights into Northern Ireland’s troubled past and the history of the loyalist community. The West Belfast Division of the original Ulster Volunteer Force was organized on the Shankill, trained in Glencairn, and some members served in the First World War with the 36th (Ulster) Division, later fighting the IRA. A remembrance garden beside the Shankill Graveyard and a mural on Conway Street honor those who fought in the war. Recruitment was significant during the Second World War, and the Shankill Road suffered damage during the Belfast Blitz when a Luftwaffe bomb hit a shelter on Percy Street, resulting in many casualties. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester visited the site soon after the attack.
- Belfast - PEACEWALLS The peace lines or peace walls are a series of separation barriers in Northern Ireland that divide predominantly Republican and Nationalist Catholic neighborhoods from predominantly Loyalist and Unionist Protestant neighborhoods. These have been constructed at urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown, and other locations. The peace lines aim to reduce inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists identifying as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists identifying as British).
The peace lines vary in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They can be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and reach up to 25 feet (8 m) high. Some have gates (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during the day but are closed at night.
