- Shankill Road - Begin your Belfast Murals Tour in the Shankill Road area, known for its Protestant/British community. Your Black Taxi Cab driver will provide an in-depth history of the area.
The tour starts in 1690, when William of Orange arrived in Ireland to defeat King James II at the renowned Battle of the Boyne. The driver will then explain the recent Troubles, which began in 1969 and concluded with the peace agreement in 1998.
Take a short walk around the area, where your Black Taxi Cab driver will describe the loyalist murals in Belfast and their significance. You’ll have the chance to capture your own photos of the Belfast murals.
- Peace Wall - The peace walls were constructed to separate the Catholic (Nationalist) and Protestant (Unionist) communities in Belfast. The first ‘peace lines’ were established following the outbreak of violence in Northern Ireland in 1969.
Originally intended as temporary structures lasting only six months, their effectiveness led to them being built higher, longer, and made permanent. They remain today, adorned with art and messages of hope from visitors.
- International Mural Wall Divis Street - The tour concludes at the International Wall, showcasing a variety of murals in Belfast. These murals generally focus on ‘highlighting oppression,’ from the 1969 race riots in America to current events in Palestine.
