Saint George’s Church – The Royal Mausoleum
Constructed after WWI by King Peter I Karadjordjević, this grand yet stunningly beautiful building was designed as the Royal Family Mausoleum. Seven rulers are interred here: Supreme Leader Karadjordje, Prince Alexander, King Peter I, King Alexander I, Queen Mother Maria, Queen Alexandra, and King Peter II.
Built in the style of Serbian medieval architecture, the church is renowned for its magnificent mosaics: 725 painted compositions featuring approximately 1,500 figures. The mosaics span 3,500 square meters (38,000 sq. ft) and consist of 40 million glass pieces in 15,000 different color shades, creating a uniquely vibrant and detailed artistic impression.

Dreams That Came True: The Legacy of Supreme Leader Karadjordje and His Grandson King Peter I
This tour is among the most favored excursions south of Belgrade, taking visitors into the “heart of Serbia” — the charming region of Šumadija.
For five centuries, the Serbian people yearned for liberation from Ottoman domination. In 1804, a brave leader, Karadjordje (“George the Black”), spearheaded the uprising that transformed this aspiration into reality. A century later, his grandson ascended as King Peter I of Serbia — a forward-thinking monarch who established one of the most remarkable royal mausoleums: the splendid Church of Saint George, renowned for its stunning mosaics.
This program provides a deep understanding of Serbia’s royal heritage and the lasting legacy of the Karadjordjević Dynasty.
