- The Maya Ruins of Caracol - Nestled in the lush green forest lies the site known as Caracol. Discovered in 1938 by mahogany hunter Rosa Mai, it was visited by A.H Anderson the same year, who named it “Caracol,” meaning “Snail Shell.” Situated on the western edge of the Maya Mountains within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, this site is perched on a plateau 500 meters above sea level. Research indicates that this vast city once housed approximately 100,000 residents. Extensive excavations and surveys have uncovered a massive central core and a densely populated area extending 8 kilometers in radius. The metropolis featured bustling markets, forested areas, craft workshops, and extensive farming. The community thrived on a network of social and economic interdependence. Visionary leaders, artists, engineers, farmers, warriors, and villagers collaborated to build a vibrant society. The legacy of the people who once inhabited this city is still evident in the physical and cultural landscape now known as “Caracol.”
