From Ancient Ruins to Underground Rivers: A Belizean Adventure
When the waves took a break, I found myself drawn to the mysteries of Belize. The allure of ancient ruins and subterranean rivers was too tempting to resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, nature, and adventure.
Discovering Xunantunich: A Journey Back in Time
The day began with the sun casting its golden rays over the lush Belizean landscape, as my wife and I set off from San Ignacio. Our guide, Jose, was a fountain of knowledge, and we were lucky enough to have him all to ourselves. The journey to Xunantunich was an adventure in itself, with a charming hand-pulled ferry ride that added a touch of whimsy to the morning. Arriving early meant we had the ancient Maya site almost to ourselves, a rare treat for any traveler.
Climbing the towering El Castillo was a highlight. Standing at the top, with the world spread out below, I felt a sense of awe that only such ancient places can inspire. The climb was manageable, broken into stages that allowed us to catch our breath and take in the views. For those wary of heights, the ascent might be a bit daunting, but the panoramic vista is worth every step. The site is well-equipped with facilities, including a large toilet block and a few tourist shops, perfect for a quick refreshment or souvenir.
Cave Tubing at Nohoch Che’en: A Subterranean Adventure
After exploring Xunantunich, we embarked on a scenic drive to Nohoch Che’en, also known as Jaguar Paw. The anticipation built as we approached the cave tubing park, where stalls offered everything from swimsuits to waterproof phone cases. We geared up with helmets, head torches, life jackets, and tubes, ready for the subterranean journey ahead.
The trek to the river was a pleasant walk through the forest, with the path winding through lush greenery and the occasional steep staircase. Crossing the river was an adventure in itself, the cool water reaching up to our thighs. The forest echoed with the sounds of nature, a serene prelude to the excitement of the caves.
Floating through the caves was a surreal experience. The gentle current carried us through the darkness, the only light coming from our head torches. The tranquility was occasionally broken by faster sections of the river, adding a thrill to the peaceful journey. We paused in a large cave, where some adventurous souls scrambled over rocks and leapt into deep pools. As a surfer, I’m no stranger to water, but I opted to watch the spectacle from the sidelines, content to soak in the atmosphere.
Reflections on a Day of Adventure
The day concluded with a short walk back to the car park, our spirits high from the day’s adventures. Even without swimming, the tubing left us wet from the waist down, so a change of clothes was essential. Renting crocs was an option, but I was glad to have my trusty walking sandals for the forest trek.
This Belizean Adventure was a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Belize’s cultural and natural heritage. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or an adrenaline junkie, this tour has something for everyone. As we drove back to San Ignacio, the sun setting behind us, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the day’s experiences and the stories we would carry with us on our next surfing adventure.
