• Chennakesava Temple - The renowned Chennakesava Temple in Belur, which took over a century to construct, is a must-visit. Visitors will spend the next few hours exploring this temple complex. Highlights include the detailed carvings of animals and dancers on the temple walls. Scenes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata are beautifully carved in stone. The main hall features sculptures with incredibly intricate carvings. Notably, the bracelets on one dancer statue’s arms can be moved up and down, and another dancer statue’s headdress has a movable ring! A unique feature of the sculptures in Belur is that they are signed by the sculptors, much like a painting, often with a boastful epithet.
• Hoysaleswara Temple - After lunch, the journey continues to Halebid, the other capital of the Hoysala Empire, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located 16 km from Belur, Halebid boasts two major highlights. Visitors will spend a couple of hours in the two magnificent temples within the complex, dedicated to Hoysalesvara and Shantalesvara. Another sculpture of interest is the giant statue of Nandi, the holy bull of Lord Shiva, which took 86 years to complete. The gracefully depicted veins on its face are particularly noteworthy.
