The Hoysala dynasty reigned from the 10th to the 14th century AD, contemporaneous with the Cholas of Tamil Nadu. Vishnuvardhana built the Belur temple to celebrate his victory over the Chola king and his conversion from Jainism to Vaishnavism. From Belur, it takes approximately 2 hours to drive to Shravanabelagola.
