- Umi Jigoku - Known as one of the more picturesque hells, the “sea hell” boasts a pond of boiling, blue water. Its expansive gardens feature smaller, orange-colored hells and a clear water pond with lotus flowers, whose large leaves can support small children.
- Oniishibozu Jigoku - This hell is named after the mud bubbles that rise from boiling mud pools, resembling the shaven heads of monks. There is also a foot bath with clear water. Next to the hell is a public bath with multiple pools, available for an additional 620 yen.
- Shiraike Jigoku - True to its name, the “white pond hell” showcases a pond of hot, milky water. The pond is encircled by a lovely garden and a small, somewhat dilapidated aquarium.
- Kamado Jigoku - The “cooking pot hell” features several boiling ponds and a vibrant demon statue as a cook. Visitors can enjoy drinking the hot spring water, hand and foot baths, inhaling the hot spring steam, and sampling various snacks cooked or steamed by the hot spring.
- Oniyama Jigoku - A significant number of crocodiles are bred and housed on the grounds of the “monster mountain hell.”
- Chinoike Jigoku - The “blood pond hell” features a pond of hot, red water and a large souvenir shop. It is one of the more photogenic hells.
- Tatsumaki Jigoku - The “spout hell” showcases a boiling hot geyser that erupts every 30-40 minutes for about 6-10 minutes. A stone plate above the geyser prevents it from reaching its full height. A short walking trail leads up the forested slope at the back of the hell grounds.
- Mt. Tsurumi - Mount Tsurumi (鶴見岳, Tsurumidake) is a 1375-meter-high mountain overlooking Beppu. Accessible via the Beppu Ropeway, it takes visitors nearly 800 meters up the steep slopes to a small park near the summit. The park offers multiple observation decks with panoramic views of Beppu and Oita City, Mount Yufu, and as far as the Kuju Mountains when visibility is clear.
The small park is interwoven with walking paths leading to various nearby viewpoints. The actual summit of Mount Tsurumi can be reached with a 15-minute walk from the upper ropeway station. More challenging hiking trails connect Mount Tsurumi to the surrounding mountain peaks. It is also possible to bypass the ropeway and hike up the entire mountain in about two hours via a trail starting at the lower ropeway station.
- Oita Prefectural Art Museum - The Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM, 大分県立美術館, Ōita Kenritsu Bijutsukan) is an art museum situated about 30 minutes from central Beppu in downtown Oita City. Not to be confused with the nearby Oita City Museum, the Oita Prefectural Art Museum opened in April 2015 in a striking building designed by Japanese architect Ban Shigeru, known for his innovative designs often incorporating structural elements made of cardboard and paper.
The building’s exterior is adorned with a wooden facade resembling woven bamboo crafts and features large glass walls that fold up, merging the indoor and outdoor spaces of the museum. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by a large atrium featuring a museum shop and space for large art installations alongside the ticket counter.
- Beppu Beach Sand Bath - Beppu is famous for its unique attractions, including sand baths available throughout the town.
One of the best spots for a sand bath is Shoningahama Beach, where the sand is heated by the spring waters bubbling beneath the surface.
Visitors come here to be buried up to their necks in the sand, which is said to have thermal properties that relax the body and alleviate aches and pains.
- Takegawara Koji Arcade - Takegawara Koji Arcade is a charming retro alley and shopping street in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan, known as the oldest timber arcade in the country. It leads to Takegawara Onsen, a famous hot spring, and is lined with retro-style shops, including coffee houses, massage parlors, and bars. The arcade was reportedly built to allow tourists to reach the onsen without getting wet from the rain.
- Beppu Park - Beppu Park is centrally located in the city and is reminiscent of parks in Tokyo and Kyoto.
This pleasant green space in the city is perfect for a stroll, especially in spring when the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom.
The park is also vibrant with color in the fall, showcasing the beautiful burnt copper autumn leaves.
