Umi Jigoku - Known as “Sea Hell,” Umi Jigoku is one of Beppu’s most renowned hot spring attractions. Created over 1,200 years ago by a volcanic eruption, this stunning geothermal pool boasts vibrant cobalt-blue waters reminiscent of a tropical ocean. However, with temperatures soaring to nearly 98°C (208°F), it is far too hot for bathing. The site is surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens, bamboo groves, and traditional pavilions, offering a serene environment despite its fiery origins. Visitors can enjoy footbaths, observe bubbling mud pools, and taste the famous “jigoku-mushi” steamed pudding, cooked using the natural heat of the springs.
-
Hells of Beppu - Oniishi Jigoku, or “Oniishi Hell,” is one of Beppu’s lesser-known yet most dynamic hot spring locations. Its name is derived from a local legend about a giant demon (oni) that once inhabited the area. The hot spring here is a vigorous boiling pool of red water, caused by the high iron content in the soil. The thick steam rising from the surface and the intense heat create a truly infernal atmosphere. The site also offers a soothing footbath and well-maintained gardens that beautifully contrast with the raw energy of the spring. With fewer visitors, Oniishi Jigoku provides a quiet, immersive experience along the famous “Jigoku Meguri” hot spring tour.
-
Mt. Tsurumi - The Beppu Ropeway provides a picturesque 10-minute journey up Mt. Tsurumi, reaching an elevation of 1,375 meters. As you ascend, enjoy sweeping views of Beppu Bay, the cityscape, and even Mt. Yufu in the distance. At the summit, the air is refreshingly cool, making it an ideal escape from the summer heat. Once at the top, you can wander along well-maintained walking paths, visit small shrines, and admire seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms in spring or vibrant foliage in autumn. On clear days, the views extend as far as the Kuju Mountains. The ropeway is more than just transportation—it’s a memorable highland adventure.
-
Lake Kinrin - Lake Kinrinko is a small yet captivating lake situated at the edge of Yufuin’s hot spring town. Its name, meaning “Golden Scale Lake,” is inspired by a legend of a sacred fish whose scales glistened like gold in the sunlight. Early mornings are particularly enchanting, as mist rises from the water due to natural hot springs flowing from the lake’s bottom. Surrounded by trees, shrines, and a riverside walking path, the area offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling shopping streets nearby. Visitors can stroll, relax on a bench, or enjoy a quiet coffee at lakeside cafés while admiring the ever-changing reflections on the water.
-
Yunotsubo Kaido - Yunotsubo Kaido is the vibrant main street of Yufuin, lined with local shops, snack stands, and unique cafés. Visitors can enjoy strolling past handmade craft stores, hot spring souvenirs, and art galleries. The street is a haven for food enthusiasts—you can sample fresh croquettes, cheese tarts, dango, and matcha sweets while walking. If you’re feeling peckish, there are cozy restaurants offering local specialties like Yufu beef or chicken tempura. Stylish cafés and dessert shops are also scattered throughout, perfect for relaxing with a coffee or sweet treat. It’s a delightful and flavorful way to experience the charm of Yufuin on foot.
-
Yufuin Area - A visit to Yufuin is incomplete without indulging in a traditional hot spring bath. After exploring the town, treat yourself to a soothing soak at one of Yufuin’s many onsen. Popular spots like Shitan-yu offer rustic charm and open-air baths, while others like Baien and Musouen provide stunning views of Mt. Yufu. Whether you choose a public bathhouse or a private onsen in a ryokan, the experience is perfect for rejuvenating tired feet and calming the mind. Concluding your journey with a hot spring soak adds a perfect touch of tranquility to a day filled with discovery in this charming mountain town.
