- Umi Jigoku - Known as “Sea Hell,” Umi Jigoku is one of Beppu’s renowned Jigoku “hells.” It features mesmerizing turquoise-blue waters heated to over 90°C (194°F), making it too hot to touch but perfect for viewing. Formed over 1,200 years ago by volcanic activity, its vibrant color is due to natural minerals. The rising steam creates a mystical scene, highlighting Beppu’s remarkable geothermal energy.
- Oniishibozu Jigoku - Oniishi Bozu Jigoku, or the “Hell of the Monk’s Head,” is an ancient hot spring that emits hot gray mud resembling a monk’s head. After the Meiji era (1868-1912), it became known as “Bozu Jigoku” and turned into a tourist attraction. It is one of the seven major Jigoku in Beppu and is located next to the Sea Hell. It offers a free footbath and a variety of unique snacks.
- Kamado Jigoku - Kamado Jigoku derives its name from an ancient myth where steamed rice was cooked using fumarolic gas at 98 degrees Celsius as an offering to the Ujigami (guardian god) during the Kamado Hachimangu Shrine Festival.
- Oniyama Jigoku - Also referred to as “Crocodile Hell,” Oniyama Jigoku was the first place in Japan, in 1923, to utilize hot spring heat for raising crocodiles. It currently houses around 70 crocodiles, including both crocodile and alligator species.
- Shiraike Jigoku - Situated in a serene Japanese-style garden, Shiraike Jigoku, or “White Pond Hell,” is named after the clear, colorless hot spring water that turns a pale blue as it cools and falls to the pond’s bottom.
- Chinoike Jigoku - Known as the “Blood Pond Hell,” Chinoike Jigoku is Japan’s oldest natural hell, dating back over 1,300 years and mentioned as “Akayusen” in the Bungo no Kuni Fudoki, a book from the Nara period. Red hot mud, containing iron oxide, magnesium oxide, and other substances, erupts from the ground, staining the reservoir’s surface red.
- Tatsumaki Jigoku - Tatsumaki Jigoku is an intermittent geyser recognized as a natural monument by Beppu City. The hot water erupts spectacularly at regular intervals, with a roof containing its force, but it can spurt up to about 30 meters.
