• Berat Castle - Founded in the 3rd century B.C. by an Illyrian tribe in central Albania, this fortified city was originally known as Antipatrea. In 1417, the Ottomans occupied the town and constructed several mosques in the area below the ancient castle. It is the only castle in Albania that still has houses and residents within its walls.
• National Iconographic Museum Onufri - Formerly St. Mary’s Church, the Onufri Museum showcases a remarkable collection of icons and includes two other churches not open to the public. The museum is named after Onufri, a renowned 16th-century Albanian master painter known for his church icons in Albania and Greece, and the distinctive red color named after him. Berat is also notable for the discovery of two of the oldest “New Testaments,” dating back to the 6th and 9th centuries AD.
