Participants will gradually immerse themselves in the medieval urban paths of the town, exploring secondary squares and fountains, eventually reaching the vibrant heart of Piazza Vecchia. The tour includes visits to the Campanone Medieval Tower, the magnificent Basilica and Cathedral with their unparalleled art treasures, and the splendid Mausoleum of Colleoni, the brave warrior of the Serenissima Republic. Strolling around, participants will discover medieval shops and old market squares, now transformed into modern business spaces. A romantic walk along a segment of the Venetian walls, a UNESCO heritage site, offers a chance to meditate on the stunning view, creating lasting memories. The journey begins at Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe with a historical introduction to Bergamo.
- Rocca di Bergamo - The tour will reach the Rocca di Bergamo on Colle di S. Eufemia, following the ancient Via Gombito and some medieval alleys among old tower houses and small squares. Upon reaching Colle di S. Eufemia, participants will explore the military structure of the Rocca di Bergamo with a brief perimeter walk, enjoying magnificent views of the ancient city with its old roofs, towers, and domes, and a broader view beyond the city limits towards the hills and the two valleys converging into the plain.
- Piazza Vecchia - Piazza Vecchia is the vibrant heart of this city, one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, waiting to be discovered. It is surrounded by the city’s most representative civil buildings, such as the ancient town hall, the 12th-century Palazzo della Ragione, the medieval Civic Tower affectionately called the Campanone of Bergamo, the A. Mai Library, and its vast and precious book collection.
- Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore - The tour will visit the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, a true treasure chest rich in art treasures created between the 13th and 19th centuries. The ancient basilica, erected in 1137, houses wonderful medieval frescoes, precious tapestries of Florentine and Flemish manufacture, 16th-century inlays, a magnificent 18th-century Baroque confessional, and many other precious artistic testimonies waiting to be discovered.
- Cappella Colleoni - After leaving the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, the tour will visit the mausoleum of the great Bergamasque leader, Bartolomeo Colleoni, Captain of the army of the Republic of Venice. The funerary chapel, freely accessible, features a magnificent polychrome facade overlooking the small Cathedral square. Inside, decorated with frescoes by G.B. Tiepolo, rest the remains of the leader who died in 1475.
- Cattedrale (Duomo) di Bergamo e Battistero - A brief time will be dedicated to describing the Duomo, which hosts art treasures of late Baroque and Rococo style; the chapel dedicated to one of the most important Popes in the history of the Church: Pope John XXIII; and to remember the presence of Bergamo’s oldest church in the Museum beneath the Cathedral.
- Campanone o Torre Civica - Participants will ascend in a crystal elevator in 26 seconds to the top of the medieval tower of the Campanone, from which they can enjoy one of the breathtaking views of Bergamo and its territory, including the crown of the Orobie Prealps.
- Mura Venete - The tour will cover a part of the southwest segment of the Venetian wall fortification surrounding the upper city, discovering the origins of the military construction in relation to Bergamo’s history; visualizing some construction details and admiring the magnificent panorama from above, while also recalling some anecdotes about the walls.
- Porta San Giacomo - The tour will conclude at another extraordinary viewpoint: Porta S. Giacomo, the most scenic gate within the perimeter of the Venetian walls, a UNESCO heritage site since 2017. Here, between the ancient Upper City and the modern Lower City, participants will feel in perfect balance and harmony between two worlds.
- Porta Sant’Alessandro - A short distance from the meeting point in Colle Aperto, participants will cross Porta S. Alessandro to look beyond the Venetian walls towards Borgo Canale, where the famous composer Gaetano Donizetti was born and where the Paleochristian Basilica of S.
