- Nordhordland Bridge - Since its construction in 1994, the Nordhordland Bridge has made the stunning Osterfjord area inaccessible to cruise travelers, as modern ships are too large to pass under the narrow inlet. This engineering marvel is the longest floating bridge in Northern Europe without side anchors. Its impressive arch design withstands the fjord’s currents as the tide flows in and out twice daily.
- Vikanes - Traveling along the fjord, we pause at Vikanes to admire the mirror-like waters in this highly protected area. The surrounding tall mountains create a unique Bergen City weather phenomenon.
- Mostraumen - The Mostraumen tidal channel, one of the fjords’ narrowest points, marks where the Osterfjord ended until a significant flood in 1743 washed away the river outlet from Mo Lake. This event allowed saltwater to enter, making it Norway’s “youngest” fjord, nonexistent 300 years ago.
- Mo - Mo Village is a charming small community with around 380 residents. The Mo waterfront features modern buildings inspired by long-standing architectural traditions, resembling both Bryggen Wharf in Bergen and historical seahouses along the fjord banks. We take a 20-minute break here for restroom visits and coffee at local shops.
- Hesjedalsfossen - The Hesjedalsfossen twin waterfall cascades 63 meters (206 feet) into a cavity on the fjord bank. We stop just meters away, and during spring, it’s wise to bring an umbrella for the best view while staying dry.
- Kallestadsundet - The Kallestad Bridge connects Osterøy, Europe’s largest inland island, to the mainland. The bridge offers a breathtaking viewpoint with the unique, roadless Veafjord scenery in the background, making it the tour’s most popular photo spot.
- Stamneshella - After Stamneshella, we briefly stop at the strongest tidal current in southern Norway, where “STRAUME” translates to “current” in English. During low tide, the fjord resembles a wild river, showcasing nature’s power. Following this stop, we begin our return to Bergen, joining the larger E-16 road back to the cruise port.
