Nordnes is a 1km (0.6 mile) long peninsula extending into Bergen harbor. While the Hanseatic League dominated trade at Bryggen, Nordnes was where Norwegian merchants established their businesses. It was also the center of power in Bergen, serving as the city’s courthouse and execution site for centuries. Notably, it was where witches were burned in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 19th century, it became a hub for sailors and a red-light district, with its narrow, dark alleys ideal for clandestine activities. Today, it is a sought-after (and pricey) neighborhood with families, schools, and beautiful parks.
