Walking tour with Freddie, highlight - Highly recommend taking a hop on hop off bus tour, great way to get your bearings in Berlin. But the real gem in our experience was the 90 minute walking tour, especially because of Freddie our guide. He had us all glued to his storytelling, jumping at the scary bits, you name it. An absolute mine of info, great fun and a fantastic tour guide.

An easy way to get around - This is a simple way to get around with having flexibility to stop and stay to explore a little. The Red bus also meets up with a Blue line bus (no additional $) to get to the longest piece of outside art (part of the old Berlin wall).

2 days in Berlin - Booked 48 hours on the Big Bus tour as we only had 2 days in Berlin and thought it would help us get our bearings. We stayed on the bus for all of 3 stops on our first day. The audio was fine however we seemed to stop for long periods in traffic or at bus stops and decided to get off and walk instead as it was too hot. Also to note the bus only goes around the centre of Berlin and there is so much more to explore in the city. What was really excellent was the walking tour (2pm daily). Freddie was amazing and really passionate about Berlin having lived there since the 80’s. Worth the ticket price alone.

Would not recommend - Would not recommend. Tour finishes around 5pm, which I had not been told when buying tickets. Although they are valid for 24 hours, I don't understand why they finish so early in the summer when it is bright. I took the 'blue route' to see the East Side Gallery. When I got off the bus, the driver told me the next bus would arrive in 10 minutes. I had a quick look at the wall, and returned to the bus stop as I was keen to fit in as much as possible, considering it was around 3pm and I was only in Berlin for 1 night. I waited for over half an hour in the hot sun, before downloading the Big Bus app to learn that the blue route bus only comes once an hour! It was such a waste of time! When I bought my 24 hour ticket, I also bought a ticket for the ferry. I retuned to Stop 1 to switch to the red route and make my way to Stop 2 to get the ferry. I waited approx 45 minutes, then the boat pulled in and said the 5.15 sailing would not be going ahead. I was so disappointed and felt I had really wasted the afternoon. I got up early the next morning to get the first bus at 9.35, only to find that the bus was stuck in traffic, so we didn't set off until nearly 10am. I stayed on for most of the stops, getting off for Brandenburg Gate/Reichstag and Potsdamer Square/Checkpoint Charlie. The prerecorded commentary was not very interesting and, on many occasions, did not match the location we were in. There was a lot of waiting - the drivers seemed to take a 10/15 minute break every few stops. Totally unnecessary! Surely one longer stop at the end of the whole route would be sufficient? I finally got to do the boat trip in the afternoon. It was fine but nothing special. There are lots of different boat trips operating at the Pier, so I would advise people to just buy a ticket when they get there, no need to buy the ticket with the bus tour as you are just tied to a certain company and time. Overall, I would not recommend the bus trip. I didn't really learn anything new. Berlin is a walkable city and I could have walked to the more interesting places myself. I felt like I wasted a lot of time sitting on idle buses and waiting for the next bus to turn up.
