- Kreuzberg - The meeting point is Kotti (Kottbusser Tor), located in the heart of the lively Kreuzberg. Following a brief introduction, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the history and lifestyle of this unique area in Berlin.
Kreuzberg originated as a typical working-class neighborhood in the mid-19th century. The residents often faced challenging times, living in large building complexes, some situated in the fifth or sixth courtyard. These locations in Oranienstraße will be explored, offering a glimpse into the past when fresh air was scarce, and many people rented an 8-hour stay on a mattress rather than an entire flat or room.
Naturally, the working class predominantly held (radical) left-wing views, leading Kreuzberg to become a neighborhood known for its critical stance and frequent demonstrations, sometimes escalating.
The guide is eager to showcase the most significant historical sites and connect them to the contemporary lifestyle and culture of modern Kreuzberg. This area is a melting pot of diverse backgrounds, opinions, lifestyles, sexualities, and incomes. As the tour progresses through the streets and history of the district, participants will encounter the former GDR traffic-light men, visit SO36, the site of May Day March demonstrations, hear dramatic stories of attempts to escape the GDR, recall Martin Luther King’s visit in 1964, and learn about Berlin’s Jack the Ripper.
Meanwhile, participants will savor exquisite snacks at selected neighborhood restaurants.
Travel enthusiasts understand that exploring new countries and cultures inherently involves sampling local cuisine. The preference is to try a variety of dishes rather than one large meal! This diverse selection aims to reflect Kreuzberg’s multicultural and innovative spirit. Participants will taste authentic Berlin recipes, intercultural fusion dishes, and international delicacies. The way to the heart is through the stomach… After three hours, participants will have experienced Kreuzberg from multiple perspectives and may understand why it is the most vibrant place to be in Berlin.
Following this culinary and cultural journey, participants will be well-prepared to embark on their next adventure in Kreuzberg and enjoy the dazzling nightlife.
