Constructed in 1936 by detainees from other camps, the Sachsenhausen concentration camp was the first established under the direction of the notorious SS Leader Heinrich Himmler, the New Chief of Police.
This camp was intended to set the standard for others, featuring an escape-proof design and harsh treatment of inmates. Between 1936 and 1945, over 200,000 individuals were held there. Initially, the camp housed Nazi opponents, but later it also imprisoned Jews, Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, and those labeled as “anti-social.”
Visitors will gain insight into the horrific conditions endured by prisoners. After an emotionally impactful tour, there is an opportunity to honor those who suffered by visiting the National Memorial, established in 1961 within the camp, before heading back to Berlin.
