A Culinary Journey Across Continents

As a museum curator with a passion for interactive exhibits, I often find myself drawn to experiences that blend education with entertainment. So, when I heard about the Istanbul Food Tour that promised a culinary journey across two continents, I knew it was an adventure I couldn’t pass up. My family and I have always been fascinated by the rich tapestry of cultures that Europe offers, and Istanbul, with its unique position straddling Europe and Asia, seemed like the perfect place to explore.

Our journey began at the bustling Karakoy Rihtim, where we met our guide, Salih. His extensive knowledge of Turkish culture, cuisine, and history was immediately apparent, and he set the tone for an evening that promised to be both educational and delicious. As we boarded the ferry to cross the Bosphorus Strait, Salih regaled us with tales of Istanbul’s storied past, pointing out landmarks and sharing insights that brought the city to life. The ferry ride itself was a highlight, offering breathtaking views of Istanbul’s skyline as the sun dipped below the horizon.

A Feast for the Senses in Kadikoy

Upon reaching the Asian side, we found ourselves in the vibrant Kadikoy Carsisi, a bustling food market that was a feast for the senses. The air was filled with the enticing aromas of spices and freshly baked bread, and the market stalls were brimming with colorful produce and local delicacies. With Salih’s guidance, we sampled an array of traditional Turkish foods, from stuffed mussels and pastrami to pickled vegetables and olives. Each bite was a revelation, offering a glimpse into the rich culinary heritage of Turkey.

One of the highlights of the market visit was the opportunity to purchase ingredients for a traditional Turkish breakfast. With Salih’s expertise, we confidently selected kaymak, honey, local cheeses, olives, pastrami, and bread, eager to recreate the experience the following morning. As we moved from stall to stall, Salih shared stories and anecdotes that added depth to our understanding of Turkish culture and cuisine.

A Sweet Return to Europe

After indulging in the delights of Kadikoy, we boarded the ferry once more, our bellies full and our spirits high. The return journey to the European side was just as enchanting, with Salih continuing to share his wealth of knowledge about the geography and history of the region. Back in Karakoy, we were treated to a variety of kebabs and meze dips at a hidden lokanta, where the proprietors welcomed us with open arms and reserved tables.

The evening culminated in a dessert experience that was nothing short of extraordinary. We savored the sweet, syrupy goodness of künefe, accompanied by the unique texture of Turkish ice cream. It was a fitting end to a night that had been as much about discovery as it was about indulgence. As we made our way back to our hotel, I couldn’t help but reflect on the evening’s journey—a perfect blend of history, culture, and cuisine that had left us all eager to return to Istanbul and explore even more of its hidden treasures.
