- Bhaktapur Durbar Square - Once the capital of the valley, Bhaktapur Durbar Square was a thriving city on the trade route to Tibet. Its traditional character has been well-preserved, more so than the other two cities, due to its relatively isolated location. Today, it stands as a classic example of medieval Nepalese town life. Located in the east of the Kathmandu valley, about 14 km away, it retains much of its charm with intricate woodcarvings and the renowned Golden Gate.
- Changunarayan - The Changu Narayan Temple, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dedicated to Vishnu, the ‘god of preservation.’ This hilltop temple, located 12 kilometers east of Kathmandu behind Bhaktapur, is rich in stunning Licchavi sculptures. It can also be reached by a pleasant half-day hike along the ridge from Nagarkot on the eastern Valley rim. The ornately decorated two-tiered temple was reconstructed after a fire in 1702, but the earliest inscription in the Valley, dated 464 A.D., highlights the remarkable talents of the Licchavi King Manadeva I, Nepal’s first significant historical figure.
