In Sanchi, visitors will find the Great Stupa, commissioned by Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty. According to legend, after his violent conquest of India, Emperor Ashoka felt remorse and found comfort in Buddhism. He constructed numerous Stupas throughout India to preserve and promote the Buddhist faith. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Stupa in Sanchi is among the best-preserved Stupas in India.
The Stupa features a large hemispherical dome standing 54 feet tall. It houses a central chamber containing the relics of Lord Buddha. The structure is encircled by four decorative gateways that face the four cardinal directions. Additionally, a sandstone pillar is present on the Stupa’s grounds, inscribed with Emperor Ashoka’s edict in the ancient Brahmi script.
Following this, enjoy lunch (beverage not included) at a local restaurant.
- Udayagiri Caves - After lunch, guests will be driven to the Udayagiri caves. Among the 20 caves, one is a Jain cave with the oldest known Jain inscription, dating back to the 4th century A.D. The other caves feature Hindu inscriptions and carvings of Hindu Gods on the walls.
At the conclusion of the tour, guests will be driven back to Bhopal and returned to their hotel.
