Dating back to the 1st century B.C., the Lalitagiri complex is recognized as one of the oldest Buddhist sites globally. The ruins reveal the remains of a large stupa on a hill and four monasteries. Two stone caskets containing relics of Lord Buddha were discovered in the stupa, with one believed to hold the Buddha’s bones. A brick rainwater cistern has also been unearthed at this location. Artefacts from the 9th and 10th centuries A.D. indicate that Tantric Buddhism was practiced here. The site features large stone statues of the Buddha in a standing pose, typical of the Gandhara School of Architecture. The artefacts found during various excavations are now housed in a museum on the complex grounds.
- Ratnagiri - Following this, guests will proceed to Ratnagiri, a half-hour drive from Lalitagiri. Ratnagiri was home to a significant Buddhist monastery that thrived from the 5th to the 12th century A.D. A large stupa, numerous shrines, monasteries, and countless stone sculptures have been excavated here. Ratnagiri was a hub for Tantric Buddhism.
At the conclusion of the tour, guests can enjoy lunch (beverages not included) at a local restaurant.
