From spring to fall, guided hikes are offered throughout Bluff Lake, the upper section of Castle Rock, and Skyline Trail. The easier version of this hike covers about two miles over mostly flat terrain, with minimal altitude gain, making it ideal for children. During the hike, there is an opportunity to teach kids about local butterflies and guide them on the best techniques for photographing them. The hike leads to the Champion Lodgepole Pine, the oldest and largest tree in the national forest. For those interested in a moderate hike to upper Castle Rock (the most popular trail in the Big Bear Valley), this option is available at the same price. Locals prefer a less-traveled trail starting from the top near Bluff Lake to Castle Rock, which is more scenic and less crowded. This hike involves more altitude gain and is approximately 4 miles round trip.
