- Rainbow Falls - One of the most iconic waterfalls, located in Hilo, cascading down the Wailuku River. Known for rainbows that appear when the sun hits the mist below. The area features many tropical trees and plants, including a famous 1/4 acre Banyan Tree that tourists and locals love to climb and swing from.
- Liliuokalani Gardens - Explore a historical 24-acre botanical garden near Hilo Bay, hosting many species of eucalyptus trees, monkey pod trees, and island tropical vegetation. Numerous bridges over saltwater tide pools full of tropical fish can be viewed and explored. Hawaiian Geese, called Nene’s (the state bird), are often seen here too.
- Big Island Candies - An exclusive local candy factory where visitors can sample famous island delicacies like macadamia nut cookies dipped in various chocolates. Free samples of Kona or Kau coffee are also available! Experience and view the production crew through large windows as they carefully make, handle, and pack their amazing products!
- Richardson Beach Park - A popular black sand beach in Hilo known for Honu’s (Hawaiian green sea turtles) that swim and relax in the saltwater tide pools. Here, tourists and locals surf, swim, snorkel, and explore the many activities available at this island paradise, or find a cool spot under a coconut tree to relax!

Justin and the Big Island made our day! - Justin was amazing. He shared a ton of information on the island as we drove around. He took us to all kinds of places to experience the Big Island. It was all very thought out. We got to see a chocolate factory, turtles, the lava fields and volcanoes, black sand beaches - everything we wanted to see. He was such a great tour guide!

Phenomenal Experience! - Our tour with Makaio Tours was hands-down one of the BEST experiences of our entire trip, and Justin deserves every bit of praise possible. From start to finish, he made the day unforgettable.
Justin was the perfect guide — knowledgeable, funny, patient, and genuinely passionate about sharing the beauty and culture of Hawaii. He made everyone feel comfortable, took his time explaining each stop, and added personal touches that truly set this tour apart from all the others we’ve taken.
The itinerary was beautifully paced, the views were breathtaking, and we never felt rushed. Justin knew all the hidden gems, the best photo spots, and even shared stories and history that gave the day so much more meaning. You can tell he loves what he does — and it shows.
Makaio Tours delivered excellence, but Justin made it exceptional.
