• Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Continue to the Big Island’s crown jewel, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Make a brief stop at the Kilauea Iki Overlook before embarking on a walk down the paved road to Keanakakoi. Observe the effects of the historic 2018 eruption, which caused road buckling, cracks, and sinkholes. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Kilauea Caldera and the vast Halema’uma’u Crater, as well as the trail leading into the Caldera. This trail, established in 1846, was once used by Mark Twain, who was rescued by native guide Alex Lancaster. The roundtrip is approximately 2 miles, passing the renowned Sulphur Banks and through ancient forests of tree ferns, some over 1,000 years old. Spot native birds like the yellow ‘amakihi and the red ‘apapane. Ancient rock slides and eruptions left massive boulders here. Look for historical marks left by visitors such as Benjamin Boyd, a Scot, and John Webster, a California artist, from 1851. Upon reaching the Kilauea Caldera floor, witness an impressive rock slide to your left, a remnant of the 2018 eruption, and the Halema’uma’u Crater ahead. The Crater expanded during the eruption, with the lava lake draining and leaving a vast 1,000-foot deep pit. Return to civilization at Volcano House for stunning views.
