Stop 2: Amish “Cottage Industry”
Due to the high cost and limited availability of farmland, many Amish have established small businesses, producing items such as gazebos, furniture, farm equipment, and quilts. These “home businesses” have been featured in books and articles highlighting the balance these entrepreneurs maintain between work and family. The visit may include a harness or carriage maker, basket weaver, greenhouse, leather or woodworker, among others. A live demonstration is typically part of this intriguing stop.
Stop 3: Amish Home Visit
To end the evening, the journey continues along scenic backroads to a remote farm in the countryside. Upon entering the house, visitors are greeted with warm conversation as they sit, chat, and engage in the Amish way, conversing informally without TVs, iPhones, or computers. It is no surprise that strangers quickly become friends.
