Into the Arctic Night

The Arctic has always been a place of extremes, a land where the sun refuses to set in summer and barely rises in winter. As a former Arctic researcher, I’ve spent countless nights under the vast, starry skies of the polar regions, but the allure of the Northern Lights never fades. This time, my journey took me to Bodø, a city perched just above the Arctic Circle, where the promise of witnessing the aurora borealis was too tempting to resist.

The adventure began in the lobby of the Scandic Havet Hotel, where I met our guide, Ivar, and the rest of the group. The air was crisp, and the anticipation was palpable. We discussed our route, a plan dictated by the whims of the weather and the geomagnetic prognosis. Our chariot for the night was a comfortable Mercedes van, equipped with all the essentials for a night of aurora chasing. As we set off into the Arctic wilderness, the city lights faded behind us, and the vast, untouched landscape of Northern Norway unfolded.

Chasing the Elusive Lights

The journey was as much about the chase as it was about the destination. Ivar, our guide, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights into the science of the aurora and the unique geography of the region. As we drove through the serene countryside, the sky began its nightly transformation, the stars twinkling like distant beacons in the cold, clear air.

As the hours passed, we encountered a few gentle moose, their silhouettes barely visible against the darkened landscape. And then, as if on cue, the Northern Lights appeared, dancing across the sky in a mesmerizing display of color and movement.
