Our visit to Bogota - First, great thanks to Andres ! We contacted him from Canada 4 months in advance and asked to arrange our visit, including hotel, airport transportation, tours. He recommended us Hotel Bicentenario and it was a good choice. We had tours: 1. Villa de Leyva, full day tour. It's about 5 hours one way, but we had a great guide Rodolfo, former English teacher. We got a lot information about all the aspects of life in Colombia, he answered for all our questions about education, medical system, history, agriculture etc. We made a few stops on the way and bought some local fruits - in Canada same fruits are not even close so delicious ! We visited village of RAQUIRA - with a lot of local handicrafts for sale extremely cheap ( nice ponchos for $20 ). The highlight of the day was visiting TERRACOTA HOUSE ( you have to pay minimal fees ) - please do not miss it. 2. GUATAVITA and ZIPAQUIRA, next full day tour. Our driver was Alex. Alex is a nice person and very knowledgeable guy ! Town of Guatavita was built from scratch in 1960-s to accomodate local people who need to leave their homes because of the construction of the dam. What a nice place ! There is even a arena Plaza de Toros ! There is no corrida in Colombia any more so this arena is used for concerts and events. Then we visited national park and a lake in the mountains ( about two hours with a local guide ). Salt caves and a church were not a highlights of the day for us. 3. Bogota City Tour, 4 hours. Our guide was Marcel, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guy too. We visited local market - so colorful because of HUNDREDS of different fruit types, thousands of flowers... We visited north of the city ( area #5 ), rich neighborhood with interesting architecture and well dresses people... Actually, ALL our guides had a mission to promote Colombia, to explain, that it is not the country of Pablo Escobar, it's a country of great people, interesting history and amazing nature !!! After that - without guides - we visited Museum Botero - very good. The other two museums are real disappointments: there is no gold in Gold Museum, the Emerald Museum is really a kind of shop on the 22nd floor, where after 20 min of a movie and a tour they want to sell you emerald jewellery for exorbitant prices. In the little shops on the same street you can buy the same three times cheaper. General impression: government makes a lot to attract tourists, there are policemen and army on each corner, we feel ourselves safe. We would gladly to come to Colombia again to visit other places.
