Budakirkja - Búðakirkja Church
Black churches are a common sight in Iceland, but Búðakirkja stands out as the most picturesque. Located in the Búðir hamlet within the Búðahraun lava field, the area boasts a natural harbor and was a significant commercial hub in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The first church was built in 1703, a small turf-covered structure with a cemetery, hosting funerals since 1705. It eventually fell into disrepair and was abolished by the Danish king in 1816.
In the mid-19th century, Widow Steinunn Sveinsdóttir, residing in Búðir, sought permission to rebuild the church. She funded its construction, and the church still stands today, completed in 1848 and consecrated in 1851.
