Budakirkja - Búðakirkja Church
While black churches are not rare in Iceland, Búðakirkja is arguably the most scenic. Located in the Búðir hamlet within the Búðahraun lava field, the area boasts a natural harbor and was a significant commercial center in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The first church was constructed in 1703, a small turf church with a cemetery, where funerals have been held since 1705. It gradually deteriorated, leading to its abolition by the Danish king in 1816.
In the mid-19th century, Widow Steinunn Sveinsdóttir, residing in Búðir, sought permission to rebuild the church. She funded its construction, and it still stands today. The church was completed in 1848 but was not consecrated until 1851.

Ytri Tunga Beach - Ytri-Tunga Beach
This location is one of Iceland’s best spots to observe seals relaxing on the reefs. Ytri-Tunga is located in the southern part of Snæfellsnes. Historically, a large farm existed here, and the expansive beach, home to seal colonies, was part of it.
Today, the area is celebrated for its natural beauty and wildlife. Unlike most Icelandic beaches, Ytri-Tunga features white sand.
The most common seal species in Iceland are the Harbor seals and Gray seals. However, with some luck, you might also see Harp seals, Bearded seals, Hooded seals, and Ringed seals. These species do not breed in Iceland and thus do not stay long.
- Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge - This is a custom tour, allowing for a personalized itinerary based on your interests.

Arnarstapi - Arnarstapi
Arnarstapi is a quaint fishing village nestled at the base of the Snæfellsjökull glacier. The coastline is striking, featuring rock formations like Gataklettur and the Stone Bridge. Arnarstapi is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, as the surrounding cliffs attract various bird species.
The village was established in 1565 as a trading post under the Danish Crown during the trading monopoly. Danish agents held custodial authority over Arnarstapi in the 17th and 18th centuries, with commercial rights over nearby lands once owned by Helgafell Monastery.
The place names Arnarstapi and nearby Hellnar are inspired by Bárðar Saga Snæfellsáss, which tells the tale of Bárður, a half-human, half-ogre.
One of the oldest buildings in Arnarstapi, Amtmannshús (The Danish Prefect’s Residence), is also among Iceland’s oldest, constructed between 1774-1787.

Djupalonssandur Beach - Djúpalónssandur Beach
Near Arnarstapi lies Djúpalónssandur Beach. Meaning Deep Lagoon’s Sand, the beach was once home to around sixty fishing boats. Despite its name, the beach is adjacent to a relatively shallow and sandy bay, facilitating easy ship landings.
The nearby creek Dritvík also served as a fishing station. It is believed that fishing from Dritvík began in the 16th century, with up to 600-700 men fishing there at its peak.
Gatklettur (Holey-Rock – distinct from the one in Arnarstapi) is located in Djúpalónssandur, alongside a charming pond called Svörtulón. Fishermen believed the beach was haunted, and there is even a cave named Draugahellir or Ghost Cave. Another intriguing site is Tröllakirkja, Troll Church.
On the beach, four lifting stones were used to test the strength of aspiring fishermen.
-
Kirkjufell Mountain - Mt Kirkjufell
The renowned Kirkjufell mountain offers fantastic photo opportunities. The scenic mountain stands at 463 meters and is climbable, though only with an experienced guide.
The mountain gained fame as the Arrowhead Mountain in the TV series Game of Thrones.

Stykkisholmur - The towns of Snæfellsnes
The towns of Hellnar, Ólafsvík, Grundarfjörður, and Stykkishólmur are all worth visiting to experience Icelandic village life. Hellnar is famous for its birdlife, particularly as a nesting site for the Arctic tern. Ólafsvík is an excellent location for whale watching. In Grundarfjörður, you can enjoy a unique view of Mt Kirkjufell, and there’s even a Colombian café. In Stykkishólmur, explore the Norwegian House and other historic buildings, or take the ferry to Flatey Island or the West Fjords. Nearby, Bjarnarhöfn hosts the Icelandic Shark Museum, an intriguing attraction.
