- Comune di Borgo a Mozzano - Your personal, specialized guide will meet you in front of the train station at Piazza Marconi (Borgo a Mozzano) either in the morning or afternoon. The first stop is a short walk away at the charming Museo della Memoria, which showcases numerous World War II documents related to Lucca and the construction of the Gothic Line. The museum also displays uniforms and weapons from both the Allied and German Armies, various items issued to the troops, a comprehensive collection of communiques from the fascist prefect regarding curfews, travel restrictions, black market sales limitations, as well as photos and documents of local Resistance fighters.
Note: If you do not have a car, Borgo a Mozzano is accessible by train.
- Campo sportivo Borgo a Mozzano - Next, enjoy a 10-minute walk to the two low-lying bunkers built to protect the antitank wall of the Gothic Line at Borgo a Mozzano. The Germans constructed two large, deep bunkers by excavating them into the rock to defend the front. These were used as observation posts, equipped to protect the antitank wall of the Gothic Line with cannons and machine guns.
To explore a third remarkable bunker, drive to the nearby medieval village of Anchiano. This bunker extends several meters into the hill beneath the village church. To safeguard the left side of the river and the Gothic Line, the Todt Organization built this impressive fortification for cannons, machine guns, and observation posts.
- Ponte della Maddalena (also known as Ponte del Diavolo) - Get back in your car and head to the legendary Ponte della Maddalena (Bridge of Mary Magdalene), commonly referred to as the ‘Devil’s Bridge’. Constructed during the Middle Ages, it allowed pilgrims traveling from northern Italy and Europe to cross the river on their way to Rome. This was the only bridge over the Serchio River that the Germans did not destroy during World War II, which turned out to be a significant strategic mistake. It is a humpback bridge with asymmetric arches and can be crossed on foot. At its highest point, it offers a stunning view of the river and surrounding hills.
