Built from 1931 to 1936 during the Great Depression, it was officially dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The construction was a monumental task that involved thousands of workers and resulted in over 100 fatalities. Initially, Congress referred to it as Hoover Dam in honor of President Herbert Hoover, but the Roosevelt administration later renamed it Boulder Dam. In 1947, Congress reinstated the name Hoover Dam.
