Exploring Portugal’s Hidden Gems: A Family Adventure in Gerês
Eager to uncover the hidden treasures of Portugal, I embarked on a family adventure to the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Join me as I share our journey through charming villages, breathtaking viewpoints, and cascading waterfalls.
A Journey Through the Village of Wolves
Our adventure began bright and early, as my children and I were greeted by our guide, Francisco, at our hotel. The kids were buzzing with excitement, and I was eager to see how this day would unfold. We were joined by Rodrigo, a fellow traveler from Brazil, and together we set off on our journey to the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
The drive was a scenic one, with the lush Portuguese countryside unfolding before us. We made a brief stop for coffee and breakfast, which was a welcome break for the kids to stretch their legs. Our first destination was the quaint village of Fafião, nestled high in the mountains. Known as the “village of the wolf,” Fafião was a charming place with its cobblestone streets and rustic charm.
Francisco led us on a trek to a historical “Wolf Trap,” a fascinating piece of local history that captivated the kids’ imaginations. The village’s connection to wolves sparked a lively discussion about wildlife conservation, a topic that always intrigues my little explorers. We continued our walk to a breathtaking viewpoint, where the panoramic views left us all in awe.
Waterfalls and Local Flavors
Our journey continued as we hopped back into the van and made our way to the POÇO DA GANCELA waterfall. The kids were thrilled to see the cascading waters, and we spent some time exploring the area, taking in the natural beauty that surrounded us.
Next, we headed to the village of Ermida, where another stunning viewpoint awaited us. The views were simply spectacular, and even the overcast weather couldn’t dampen our spirits. Lunch was a delightful affair at Casa do Criado, a small family-run restaurant. The warm hospitality and delicious Portuguese dishes made us feel right at home. The kids enjoyed trying the local green wine (just a sip for them!) and were fascinated by the unique flavors of the Licor Beirão.
Peaks and Perspectives
The afternoon was filled with more adventures as we visited the CASCATA DO ARADO waterfall, situated at an altitude of 750 meters. The kids were amazed by the sheer force of the water, and Francisco’s stories about the region kept us all entertained.
Our final viewpoint of the day offered the highest vantage point, just eight miles from the Spanish border. The views were nothing short of spectacular, and it was a perfect spot for a family photo. As we made our way back to the town of Gerês, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll and a coffee break, reflecting on the day’s adventures.
Despite the rain and clouds, the beauty of the Gerês region shone through, reminding me of the Scottish Highlands, only warmer. Francisco’s passion for nature and his knowledge of the area made the tour feel like a journey with friends. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories, and I can’t wait to return to explore more of Portugal’s hidden treasures with my family.
