Join a small group day tour to explore the remarkable Rupea Fortress and the stunning Racos Geological Complex. The Quaternary basaltic eruptions in the Persani Mountains mark the final volcanic activities in the Carpathian Mountains, creating the “Basalt Triangle” (Racos - Rupea - Comana de Sus). These eruptions occurred between 2 and 0.5 million years ago, and the most significant basalt formations are now protected by nationally important geo-sites: the Racos Geological Complex and the Rupea Basaltic Cliff.
Currently, the Racos Geological Complex showcases the Quaternary basaltic volcanic eruptions from around 1.3 to 1.5 million years ago, which can be observed in the three quarries.
Visit the Brazi Basalt Quarry, where Brazi Lake, known locally as the Emerald Lake, began forming after mining activities ceased. Continue to the Basalt Columns Natural Monument, where basalt mining ended in the 1960s when the site was designated a natural monument.
