- Glass House Mountains Lookout - Nestled in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the Glass House Mountains provide a stunning and distinctive experience for those interested in both natural beauty and cultural history. These ancient volcanic peaks, named by Captain James Cook in 1770, enchant visitors with their dramatic landscapes and sweeping views. Rich in First Nations heritage, the area is steeped in the stories and traditions of the indigenous people. Composed of trachyte and rhyolite, the mountains were formed approximately 25-27 million years ago as molten lava cooled and solidified within ancient volcanic vents. Over time, the softer surrounding material eroded, revealing the striking peaks visible today.
- McCarthy’s Lookout - Situated in Jinibara Country in Maleny, this lookout offers breathtaking views of the Glass House Mountains and the surrounding countryside. It houses over 200 species of animals, including native Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas, wombats, quokkas, and Tasmanian devils, as well as exotic animals like monkeys, red pandas, ring-tailed lemurs, and sun bears. When Alma Park Zoo closed in March 2014 to make way for a housing development, Julie Seabrook and her team negotiated with the zoo’s owners to take over the animal collection. Julie and her keepers established the new Wildlife HQ in Woombye to safely accommodate the 200 animals in their new permanent home at the Big Pineapple.
