This stunning square features the monumental Town Hall of Mechelen, adorned with a sculpture of the most influential man in Spain (and all of Europe) during the first half of the 16th century. Can you guess who it is? It’s the illustrious Charles of Habsburg, I of Spain and V of Germany, born in Ghent in February 1500.
- Mechelen City Hall - The City Hall of Mechelen stands as one of the city’s most notable buildings, showcasing an excellent blend of Gothic and Renaissance civil architecture in Belgium.
- Saint Rumbold’s Cathedral - From the Grote Markt, the towering bell tower (98 meters high) of St. Rumbold’s Cathedral is visible. The tower remains unfinished - do you know why? The answer will be revealed!
- Margaretha van Oostenrijk - The tour continues through Mechelen, highlighting other iconic buildings such as the Palace of Margaret of Austria: one of the most cultured women of her era and the beloved aunt of Charles V.
