- Neagra Bison Reservation - This site offers a rare glimpse into European prehistory, located just an hour from Bucharest. The European bison, the largest land animal in Europe, can weigh up to 1,000 kg.
Established in 1983, the Bucșani reserve is the largest in Romania. It is not a zoo but a reserve spanning approximately 160 hectares, where animals live in a protected yet wild environment.
The optimal time to visit is in the morning, around 10:30, when the bison come to the feeding areas and can be easily viewed from the observation tower.
Situated in the heart of the ancient Neagra Forest, the reserve offers complete tranquility (often without cell phone signal), perfect for those seeking unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences.
- Unirea Salt Mine - The Unirea Mine in Slănic Prahova is a breathtaking tourist destination, a true underground cathedral carved from salt, offering a unique experience that blends industrial history with natural health benefits.
The salt mine captivates with its chamber designs, featuring a trapezoidal profile and heights reaching up to 70 meters, creating a vast, airy, and surreal space.
Regardless of the season, the temperature inside remains constant at around 12-13°C, and the air is exceptionally pure, free from radiation and pollution, with low relative humidity (50-60%).
The unique microclimate, rich in saline aerosols, is celebrated for its positive effects on the respiratory system. A visit here can help alleviate respiratory conditions and enhance overall health.
It is a rare chance to witness such a large underground structure, a true “cathedral” of salt, offering a landscape that seems otherworldly.
Additional cost - 55 RON (11 Euro) per person
- Ploiesti - Known as the Black Gold Capital of Europe, Ploiești holds deep historical significance as the site of the world’s first oil refinery, built in 1857. This innovation led to Bucharest becoming the first city globally to be illuminated by gas lamps.
For many Americans, “Ploiești” is synonymous with one of the most daring and costly air missions in US history - Operation Tidal Wave. On August 1, 1943, B-24 Liberator bombers flew at low altitude from Libya to target the refineries that powered the German war machine. The mission was so intense that five Medals of Honor were awarded in a single day — a record for the Air Force.
