It suffered destruction at the hands of far-right Legionaries/Nazis but was restored in 1945 after World War II. It continues to hold daily religious services in its small hall, remaining one of the few active synagogues in both the city and Romania.
- Museum of History of the Jewish Community - The remarkable Holy Union Temple synagogue, built in 1836, has been a museum of Jewish history since 1978. Various exhibitions showcase the lifestyle of Bucharest’s once-thriving Jewish community, alongside an impressive collection of Jewish liturgical items, mostly gathered by Moses Rosen, Romania’s chief rabbi from 1964 to 1994, who also founded the museum.
- Holocaust Memorial - Inaugurated in October 2009, Romania’s Holocaust Memorial acknowledges the nation’s involvement in the genocide of European Jews. According to the Wiesel Report, commissioned by the Romanian government, Romania was responsible for more Jewish deaths than any country outside Germany. The memorial features a column with a Hebrew letter on each side, collectively spelling “zachor” (remember). It also includes a hall of remembrance and several plaques listing the names of numerous Romanian Holocaust victims.
- Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat - A center of Hebrew culture.
