Rusizi National Park - Located next to the Rusizi River, Rusizi National Park is a protected area in Burundi, situated 15 km north of Bujumbura. It is home to wildlife such as hippopotamuses and sitatungas. The park is also known for Gustave, a Nile crocodile, rumored to have claimed 300 lives.
Bujumbura - Part of the Rift Valley lake system, Lake Tanganyika is the world’s longest freshwater lake, stretching 420 miles and spanning Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Numerous rivers, including the Rusizi, flow into the lake, which then drains into the Lukuga, part of the Congo Basin. The lake hosts around 400 fish species, including many unique cichlids. It was first ‘discovered’ by explorers Burton and Speke in 1858 during their quest for the Nile’s source and was a site of naval battles between British and German forces during World War I.
