The building’s architect was chosen through an international competition in 1895, the first of its kind, and was won by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon. Among its unparalleled collection are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I, the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette, which marks the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king.

Established as a trade center during the Mamluk era and named after one of its historic caravanserais, the bazaar district has become a major attraction for both tourists and Egyptians. It is also home to numerous Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. Historically, Khan el-Khalili referred to a single building in the area; today, it denotes the entire shopping district.
