Its name is believed to honor Fatimah, the daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, who is a revered figure in Islam and was given the title az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
