The Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It features the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These were all constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site also includes several cemeteries.
• Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, which is currently buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Although diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, the site remains unexcavated. The valley temple was linked to a causeway that was mostly destroyed during the village’s construction.
• Khafre’s Pyramid - The pyramid complex of Khafre comprises a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple revealed several statues of Khafre, some of which were discovered in a well in the temple’s floor by Mariette in 1860.
• Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple originally housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple.
• Great Sphinx - Situated on the east side of the complex, the Great Sphinx is believed by Egyptologists to have the head of Khafre. In addition to these major monuments, there are several smaller satellite structures, known as “queens” pyramids, causeways, and valley pyramids. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel in Cairo or Giza.
