- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid of Giza[a] is the largest of the Egyptian pyramids. It was constructed as the tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, who reigned during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. Built around 2600 BC,[3] over approximately 27 years,[4] it is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one that remains largely intact. It is the most renowned monument of the Giza pyramid complex, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Memphis and its Necropolis”.[5] It is located at the northeastern end of the line of the three main pyramids at Giza.
Originally standing at 146.6 meters (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Over time, much of the smooth white limestone casing was removed, reducing the pyramid’s height to the current 138.5 meters (454.4 ft); what is visible today is the underlying core structure.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue depicting a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a human head and a lion’s body.[1] Facing directly from west to east, it is situated on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx is believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre.[2] The original form of the Sphinx was carved from bedrock and has been restored with layers of limestone blocks.[3] It measures 73 m (240 ft) in length from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) in height from the base to the top of the head, and 19 m (62 ft) in width at its rear haunches.[4]
- Giza Plateau - The Giza Plateau (Arabic: هضبة الجيزة) is a limestone plateau in Giza, Egypt, home to the Fourth Dynasty Giza pyramid complex, which includes the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers’ village, and an industrial complex. It forms the northernmost part of the 16,000 ha Pyramid Fields on the edge of the Western Desert in the Nile Valley, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Memphis and its Necropolis.
The plateau is elevated approximately 60 meters above sea level.
