- Gizeh Plateau - Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza by a tour guide, followed by a transfer to the Giza Pyramids for a half-day tour. You’ll visit the Great Pyramids - Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos. The Giza Pyramids and the Great Sphinx are among the world’s most renowned tourist attractions, having been famous even during Roman times. These magnificent structures served as the final resting places for kings of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was constructed for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), with the other two built for his son Khafre and grandson Menkaure. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest of the three, and it remained the tallest building in the world for 3,800 years!
While the three pyramids dominate the plateau, they are surrounded by many other monuments. Each king’s pyramid was the central element of a larger complex.
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid, the tomb of King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), originally stood at 146.5 meters tall and was the tallest structure in the world for 3,800 years. It is the last surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and took an estimated 10 to 20 years to build. The exact methods of its construction remain uncertain.
The Great Pyramid is made of local limestone, but its exterior was once covered with high-quality limestone from Turah, south of Maadi, transported by ship. Inside, the pyramid has three chambers: one cut into the bedrock below and two high up within the masonry, a unique feature. The sarcophagus where Khufu was laid to rest is still in the upper chamber, known as the King’s Chamber. This room is accessed through the Grand Gallery, a majestic corbelled ascending passage and a masterpiece of ancient engineering and architecture.
- Pyramid of Khafre - Khafre (c.2558–2532 BC), known to the ancient Greeks as Khefren, was a son of King Khufu. He built the second pyramid complex at Giza, constructing his tomb on slightly higher ground to make it appear as tall as his father’s. Standing at 143.5 meters, his pyramid is only slightly shorter but equally impressive. Its core is made of local limestone, and the top still retains some of the polished high-quality limestone casing that once covered the entire structure. This white stone was quarried in Turah and transported by ship.
Khafre’s mortuary temple at the foot of his pyramid and the valley temple at the end of the causeway are larger and better preserved than those of older pyramids.
- Pyramid of Menkaure - Menkaure (known as Mykerinos to the ancient Greeks; c.2532–2503 BC) built the third and smallest of the three large Giza Pyramids. Likely the son of Khafre and grandson of Khufu, Menkaure’s pyramid has a base area less than a quarter of the others and originally stood at 65 meters. The smaller size is due to limited space on the Giza Plateau and the use of granite for the outer casing, which was quarried in Aswan, over 800 km away. Only the bottom quarter of the casing stones are granite, with the rest being limestone.
- Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza, the most famous colossal statue of ancient Egypt, was carved directly from the bedrock during the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC), making it the oldest. Sphinxes represented the king with a lion’s body, symbolizing power.
Evidence suggests the Great Sphinx was carved during Khafre’s reign (c.2558–2532 BC), the builder of the second Giza pyramid. The Sphinx and its temple lie next to Khafre’s valley temple and the lower portion of the causeway leading to his mortuary temple and pyramid. Archaeological analysis shows the valley temple was completed before work began on the Sphinx and its temple.
